Today, our Daily Prayer Group was deeply honored by a visit from Bishop Jonathan Grenon, who shared powerful insights from Luke 14:25-27. His reflections on these verses not only enriched our understanding of true discipleship but also reminded us of the cost he is paying for his unwavering loyalty to Christ, even while enduring the injustice of unlawful imprisonment.
In these scriptures, Jesus speaks to the multitudes, calling His followers to a level of commitment that surpasses all worldly ties. He declares, “If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple” (v. 26). Jonathan explained that this is not a call to hatred but a command to prioritize our love and allegiance to Christ above all else. To follow Him, we must place God at the center of our lives, even above our most cherished relationships and personal ambitions.
Jonathan also shared the meaning of Jesus’ words, “Whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple” (v. 27). Bearing the cross signifies embracing the sacrifices, challenges, and even persecution that come with being a disciple of Christ. It is a call to surrender, to endure trials with faith, and to live wholly for the glory of God.
For Jonathan Grenon, these verses are not just words—they are a lived reality. His willingness to suffer for his faith and to remain steadfast in his devotion to Christ, despite his unlawful imprisonment, stands as a powerful testament to the cost of discipleship. His example challenges us all to reflect on our own commitment to following Jesus and to trust in God’s eternal purpose, even in the midst of injustice.
Jonathan’s visit was a profound blessing, reminding us that the road to discipleship is often marked by sacrifice but leads to eternal glory. As we reflect on his courage and the truth of these scriptures, let us renew our own dedication to Christ, bearing our crosses with faith and perseverance.
